There was a question on my Twitter timeline that I responded to which asked “how long did it take you to land your first tech job?”
My response: 3 months. No certs, no experience. Did administrative assistant for a tech company, networked, and skyrocketed after.
I created this post to elaborate more on this and because Twitter only allows so many characters unless you create a thread.
When I say network, I really didn’t network as much as the “tech standard” implies. I was actually sitting at my desk on-site and my boss would walk past and ask questions such as, how come I didn’t take my breaks away from the desk. I told him I was studying and taking learning courses. He saw that I was dedicated and utilized my breaks to study rather than walk around or do whatever came to mind. He then promoted me because he saw that I had it in me to reach my full potential. Doing your regular work tasks and doing something such as simply studying at your desk while you eat, etc. sets the tone for your tech career. This will not always be the case since remote work is now popular, but I elaborated on this Twitter question in a blog post to show you that sometimes all it takes is being noticed by the right person for your career to take off. You have to showcase your work ethic and show that you’re more than a person sitting behind a desk. You’re showing that you have goals, you want to be paid more, and that you’re willing to work for it.
Even if you don’t get noticed, do not let that stop you. Self-education is major key! The more you educate yourself, the further you’ll succeed.
